Columbus, with a population of approximately 3,200, is the county seat of Cherokee County. The City has a strong agricultural and industrial base. It is also home to a Carnegie library, museum, and hospital. The centrally located community provides easy access to area hunting, fishing, and sightseeing opportunities. Each year Columbus hosts the Cherokee County Fair as well as the Columbus Day Festival and Hot Air Balloon Regatta.
